Rann Utsav Experiences
12+ unique experiences for every kind of traveller — from ancient folk traditions to desert adventures, and from royal wellness to silent stargazing over the White Rann.
CATEGORY 01
Cultural Experiences
Kutch is home to some of India's most ancient and vibrant cultural traditions. At Rann Utsav, these traditions are alive, accessible, and participatory — not just spectacles behind velvet ropes.
Garba & Dandiya Nights
The Garba and Dandiya Raas performances at Rann Utsav are among the most memorable cultural experiences in all of India. As the desert night falls and the stars emerge over the White Rann, the festival grounds come alive with the rhythmic clapping, spinning, and joyous shouts of hundreds of performers dressed in the finest traditional Kutchi attire — women in richly embroidered chaniya cholis, men in dhotis with colourful turbans. The music swells with the dhol and shehnai, and what begins as a spectator event quickly becomes participatory. Guests from across the country — and the world — join in, learning the basic steps from patient local performers. On full moon nights, when the White Rann shimmers silver under the moonlight, the Garba takes on an almost magical quality. The combination of the desert setting, the silver landscape, and the ancient art form creates an experience that travellers consistently describe as life-changing. Sessions run nightly from 8 PM to 10 PM at the main cultural stage. On Navratri and special event nights, the performances extend past midnight.
Kutchi Folk Music
The music of Kutch has its own soul — a sound born from the confluence of Sindhi, Rajasthani, and Gujarati traditions, shaped by centuries of life on the edge of the desert. At Rann Utsav, the Mir and Meghwal communities — the traditional music keepers of Kutch — perform daily, singing devotional songs called Bhajans and Sufi Kalam that carry the weight of generations. The Surabhi Ghada (a clay pot instrument), the Jantar (a traditional two-string instrument), and the Khartal (wooden clappers) create a sound that is utterly unlike anything you will hear elsewhere. Evening performances typically begin at 7 PM at the open-air cultural amphitheatre. Early morning performances at sunrise — when the mist rises over the salt flats and the first light touches the White Rann — are rarer but profoundly moving. Ask our booking team to reserve front-row seating for you during peak season evenings.
Puppet Show (Kathputli)
The Kathputli (string puppet) shows at Rann Utsav are performed by hereditary puppeteers from the Bhatt community of Rajasthan, who have practised this art form for over 1,000 years. Each puppet is hand-carved from mango wood and dressed in miniature embroidered costumes, the details of which can take days to complete. The shows — typically 40 minutes long — narrate tales from Rajput folklore, local legends of Kutch, and comic scenes of village life. Watching a master puppeteer control three or four marionettes simultaneously, making them dance, swordfight, and perform acrobatics, is a revelation. Children are mesmerised, but adults are equally captivated. Shows run twice daily — at 4 PM and 7 PM — at the cultural village section of the Rann Utsav grounds. Photography is welcome, and puppeteers often invite young audience members to try handling a puppet after the show.
Bhavai Dance
Bhavai is one of Gujarat's most astonishing traditional dance forms — performed by female dancers who balance an extraordinary stack of earthen pots on their heads while dancing with bare feet on the edges of swords, glass, and brass thalis. The dance originated as a form of devotional offering to the goddess Amba and has been performed in Gujarat for over 700 years. At Rann Utsav, the Bhavai performances are a centrepiece of the evening cultural programme. The performers, draped in heavily embroidered odhnis, maintain perfect poise and grace through increasingly difficult balancing feats — building tension in the audience to an almost unbearable degree before resolving with triumphant stability. The combination of physical virtuosity, spiritual intention, and visual spectacle makes Bhavai one of the most compelling things to witness at the festival.
Handicraft Demonstrations
Kutch is arguably India's single richest district for traditional handicrafts — home to Ajrakh block printing, Rogan art (a 400-year-old painting technique using castor oil paints on fabric), Bandhani tie-dyeing, Kutchi mirror embroidery, clay pottery, and copper bell-making, among others. At Rann Utsav, the craft village brings master artisans from over 20 different craft communities under one roof, where guests can watch them work, ask questions through interpreters, and participate in guided workshops. The Rogan art sessions — where a single drop of paint is manipulated with a thumb to create intricate patterns — are consistently rated by guests as one of the most meditative and absorbing experiences of the festival. Workshops run daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. Pieces created in workshops can be taken home as unique mementos.
Kutchi Food Tasting
The cuisine of Kutch is distinct from mainstream Gujarati cooking — shaped by the desert climate, the pastoral traditions of its communities, and its centuries of maritime trade. At Rann Utsav, daily food tasting sessions introduce guests to dishes that rarely appear on restaurant menus: Dhal Dhokri (lentil dumplings simmered in a spiced broth), Kutchi Dabeli (a spiced potato filling in a bread roll, topped with sweet chutneys and pomegranate), Khamir (a traditional sourdough flatbread), Titar (a milky dessert flavoured with cardamom and saffron), and the extraordinary Kutchi Mutton dish available at select tasting sessions. Vegetarian guests have an equally rich landscape to explore — the Kutchi Thali, served at the Rann Utsav dining hall, features 12 to 15 dishes and unlimited refills of the finest Bajra Rotla and fresh-churned buttermilk.

Adventure Activities
The vast open landscape of the White Rann is the perfect setting for adventure. From aerial paramotoring to dune-busting ATVs, there is enough adrenaline here to keep even the most seasoned adventurer thoroughly satisfied.
ATV Rides
All-terrain vehicle (ATV) rides across the edge of the White Desert are one of the most exhilarating experiences at Rann Utsav. Guided by trained operators, guests can navigate the salt flats and surrounding terrain on four-wheeled ATVs, kicking up plumes of white salt dust as they go. The combination of the flat, open landscape and the powerful vehicles creates a rush of speed and freedom that is unique to this setting. Available in 30-minute and one-hour sessions. Minimum age 12 years; adult co-riders required for ages 12–15. Safety briefing and helmets provided. Best experienced in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden over the desert.
Paramotoring
Paramotoring — powered paragliding — offers a bird's-eye view of the White Rann that is, quite simply, unlike anything else in India. Seated in a harness beneath a paragliding canopy attached to a small engine, guests are lifted gently into the desert sky and carried over the shimmering salt flats at altitudes of 100 to 300 metres. The view — an endless expanse of white, with the distant horizon of the Rann stretching to Pakistan — is extraordinary. Sessions are conducted by DGCA-certified pilots with extensive experience in Kutch's desert conditions. Available in tandem flights (pilot + guest) for non-pilots. Subject to weather conditions; advance booking strongly recommended as slots fill quickly during peak season (November to February).
Camel Safari
No visit to Rann Utsav is complete without a camel ride across the White Desert. The camels at Dhordo are Kutchi Camels — a local breed known for their calm temperament and suitability for long desert journeys. Guided safaris range from 30-minute sunset rides around the tent city perimeter to two-hour expeditions deeper into the salt flats under a full moon. Each camel is led by an experienced handler from the local Rabari community, who can share stories of traditional camel herding and desert navigation. The full-moon camel safari — available on full moon nights throughout the season — is the most sought-after experience and requires advance booking through The Tourism Experts.
Paintball
The paintball arena at Rann Utsav provides a surprisingly fun contrast to the serenity of the surrounding desert landscape. Available for groups of four or more, the arena features desert-themed cover and barriers for a uniquely Rannscape backdrop to this popular team sport. Safety masks, protective gear, and all equipment are provided. Sessions are supervised by trained marshals. Paintball is particularly popular with corporate groups and school parties, who book the arena for team-building activities. The contrast of traditional handicraft sessions in the morning and competitive paintball in the afternoon is something guests consistently remember with delight.
Bicycle Desert Tour
Cycling around the periphery of the White Desert — on well-maintained hybrid bicycles provided by the resort — offers a gentler but no less memorable way to experience the Rann. Guided bicycle tours of 90 minutes depart daily at 7 AM (to catch the morning light over the salt flats) and at 5 PM (for the sunset view). The routes take cyclists along the edge of the desert, through the local Dhordo village — where guests can interact with the Mir community and observe daily village life — and back to the tent city via a scenic path through the salt flat border. Bicycles are fitted with gears suitable for flat desert terrain. No prior cycling experience required beyond basic balance.

Wellness & Serenity
The White Rann is, above all else, a place of extraordinary peace. The wellness experiences at Rann Utsav are designed to help you slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what matters most — whether that is the stars above or the silence around you.
Spa & Wellness Treatments
Premium Rann Utsav packages include access to a dedicated spa facility within the tent city, offering traditional Kutchi and Ayurvedic wellness treatments. Signature treatments include the Rann Rejuvenation — a 90-minute full-body treatment using locally sourced oils infused with desert herbs — and the Kutchi Mud Wrap, which uses mineral-rich clay from the Rann for detoxification. Swedish and deep-tissue massages are also available. The spa operates from 9 AM to 8 PM daily. Advance booking is recommended. Spa access is included in Deluxe AC Swiss and Rajwadi AC packages.
Stargazing Sessions
The Rann of Kutch, far from the light pollution of any major city, offers some of the finest stargazing conditions in India. On clear nights, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye over the White Desert — a canopy of stars reflected faintly in the salt flats below, creating the impression of being suspended in space. Rann Utsav's nightly stargazing sessions are conducted by trained astronomers with powerful telescope equipment. Guests can observe planets, nebulae, star clusters, and on special occasions, meteor showers. The sessions begin at 9 PM and typically run for 90 minutes. Hot chai and local snacks are served under the stars. Blankets are provided for cooler nights from December to February.
Sunrise Walk on the White Desert
A sunrise walk on the White Rann is one of the most profound experiences available at Rann Utsav. Departing from the tent city at 5:30 AM, guided groups walk 15 minutes to the edge of the salt flats and stand in silence as the first light of dawn spreads across the desert. The light transforms the white salt from grey to pale gold to brilliant silver-white over the course of an hour, while flamingos and other migratory birds pass overhead. The absolute silence of the desert at dawn — broken only by birdsong and the distant tinkling of camel bells — is something guests describe as meditative and deeply moving. Warm layers are essential from November to February, when dawn temperatures can drop to 8°C.
Swimming Pool & Leisure
The Rann Utsav tent city includes a beautifully designed outdoor swimming pool available to guests of Deluxe AC Swiss and Rajwadi AC tent packages. The pool area features sun loungers, a poolside café, and views of the surrounding desert landscape. Open from 7 AM to 8 PM daily, the pool is heated during cooler months (December to February). A poolside barbecue dinner is hosted on Saturdays throughout the season — a relaxed evening of grilled local specialities, live folk music, and the peaceful desert night.
Bonfire Evenings
Every evening at the Rann Utsav tent city, as the desert temperature drops and the stars appear, a grand bonfire is lit at the central gathering area. The bonfire evenings are informal and convivial — guests gather around with hot chai and bajra rotla, folk musicians play softly in the background, and the conversation flows between travellers from across India and the world. It is at the bonfire that many guests form lasting friendships and swap travel recommendations, recipe ideas, and life stories. The Mir community elders often join the bonfire circle, sharing stories of life in the desert through interpreters. The bonfire is lit at 8 PM every evening and continues until the last guest retires for the night.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
Photography Guide
The White Rann of Kutch is one of India's great photography destinations — a landscape of extraordinary visual drama that changes character dramatically across the day and across the season. Serious photographers should plan to arrive at least three nights to capture the full range of what this landscape offers.
Best Spots: The primary photography location is the White Desert entry point at Dhordo, where the salt flats extend uninterrupted to the horizon. The Kalo Dungar (Black Hill) viewpoint offers a completely different perspective — an elevated panorama of the Rann from 462 metres. The village of Dhordo itself, with its traditional bhungas and brightly dressed residents, is equally rewarding for street and portrait photography. The Vijay Vilas Palace at Mandvi is the finest architectural subject in the region.
Best Times: Golden hour — 30 minutes before and after sunrise and sunset — is when the salt flats glow most dramatically. Full moon nights (see our Special Dates page) offer a completely different palette — the Rann turns silver-white under moonlight, and long exposures reveal a landscape that looks like another planet. Star photography is best on new moon nights from November to February, when atmospheric clarity is highest.
Camera Tips: A wide-angle lens (16–35 mm equivalent) is essential for capturing the scale of the Rann. A telephoto lens (200–400 mm) is invaluable for wildlife photography at the Wild Ass Sanctuary. Bring a sturdy tripod — the desert wind can be strong, and long exposures for night photography require stability. A polarising filter dramatically improves daytime shots of the salt flats by reducing glare. Sensor dust is a real concern — bring a blower and microfibre cloths as the desert environment is dusty even when still.
