Dholavira Tent City — UNESCO Heritage Stay
Sleep beside a 5,000-year-old city. Dholavira is India's most extraordinary heritage site — and staying here is one of the great travel experiences of the subcontinent.
ABOUT DHOLAVIRA
The 5,000-Year-Old City on the Edge of the Rann
In the summer of 2021, UNESCO inscribed Dholavira as a World Heritage Site, recognising it as "one of the most remarkable and well-preserved urban settlements from the ancient world." The city dates to approximately 3000–1500 BCE — a contemporary of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia — and at its peak housed an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 inhabitants in a planned urban complex that included a fortified citadel, a middle town, a lower town, reservoirs, and a sophisticated network of water channels that still impresses civil engineers today.
Dholavira sits on Khadirbet Island — an elevated terrain island in the middle of the Great Rann of Kutch. During the monsoon, the surrounding salt flats flood and the island becomes a true island; during the dry season (and the Rann Utsav festival period), a narrow causeway road connects it to the mainland. This road — often called the "Road to Heaven" — stretches ruler-straight across the white salt flat to the horizon, and is one of the most photographed roads in India.
The site itself spans 100 hectares and is divided into three main zones: the Citadel (home to the ruling and administrative classes, with large ceremonial grounds), the Middle Town (commercial and residential areas), and the Lower Town (artisan quarters and workshops). The most famous find from Dholavira is the "Dholavira signboard" — ten large Indus script symbols arranged in what appears to be a public inscription, found above what may have been the north gate. It remains undeciphered, which only adds to the mystery.
Walking through the ruins of Dholavira is a profoundly humbling experience. The scale of the ancient city — the massive walls, the precisely cut stone, the geometric precision of the water reservoirs — speaks to an urban civilisation of extraordinary sophistication. The fact that it stood on an island in the middle of the Rann, surrounded by salt desert, and yet managed its water resources so ingeniously that it survived for 1,500 years, makes it genuinely astonishing.
The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the site with growing visitor infrastructure, including a site museum, guided tour services, and informational panels throughout the ruins. A certified archaeological guide makes an enormous difference to understanding what you are seeing — the context transforms the stones from ruins into a living city.

THE PERFECT COMBINATION
Why Combine Dholavira with Rann Utsav
The Rann of Kutch is not just the White Desert festival. It is one of India's most geographically and historically layered landscapes — and combining a Rann Utsav stay with a Dholavira visit gives you both the spectacular present-day cultural event and a journey 5,000 years back in time.
Our 3 Night / 4 Day package (₹16,000 per person) is specifically designed for this combination. Two nights at Dhordo Tent City for the festival experience, followed by a dedicated full-day excursion to Dholavira with a certified guide, before heading back to Bhuj for departure. It is the definitive Kutch experience.
For independent travellers, Dholavira is also easily accessible as a self-drive day trip from Dhordo. The 160-km road journey through the salt flats is spectacular in itself — you drive across the Rann on raised embankments with white desert on either side, passing through landscapes that look like the surface of another planet.

The Wild Ass Sanctuary
The Little Rann of Kutch, surrounding Khadirbet Island, is home to the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary — covering 4,954 square kilometres and established in 1973 to protect the khur (Equus hemionus khur), the Indian Wild Ass. Once on the brink of extinction with fewer than 500 animals, the population has recovered dramatically to over 6,000 individuals today, thanks to the sanctuary and community conservation efforts.
The salt flats around Dholavira are some of the best places in India to spot wild asses in their natural habitat — they roam in small herds across the flat terrain, visible from long distances. Early morning jeep safaris from Dholavira properties frequently encounter herds of 10–20 animals. The sanctuary is also home to wolves, foxes, desert cats, pelicans, flamingos, and a remarkable variety of migratory birds during the winter season.
