FOR FAMILIES

Why Families Love Rann Utsav

Safe & Controlled Environment

Dhordo Tent City is a fully managed, security-supervised site. Families can let children explore independently within the festival grounds.

Educational by Nature

From Harappan history at Dholavira to Kutchi craft traditions, every day teaches children something new about India's cultural and natural heritage.

Photo-Worthy at Every Moment

The White Rann at sunset, children in colourful Rajasthani outfits against the salt desert — Rann Utsav produces some of the most beautiful family photographs imaginable.

Cultural Immersion

Watching folk artists, trying Gujarati thali, participating in craft sessions — children return home with a genuine understanding of Kutchi culture.

Something for Every Age

From toddlers enchanted by camel processions to teenagers thrilled by ATV rides and star-gazing — every family member finds their highlight at Rann Utsav.

KIDS ACTIVITIES

What Children Love at Rann Utsav

Rann Utsav is not merely a beautiful landscape — it is an experiential playground for children of all ages. From hands-on craft workshops with master artisans to camel rides and ATV adventures, every day delivers something memorable.

Camel Ride

A gentle ride on decorated camels across the salt flats — a memory children talk about for years. Supervised by experienced handlers. Age four and above.

ATV Ride

Older children (ten and above) can join parents on an ATV ride across the White Rann. The flat, open terrain makes it safe and thrilling in equal measure.

Folk Dance Watch

Vibrant Garba, Dandiya, and Kutchi folk performances captivate children with colour, music, and energy. Many performers encourage children to join in.

Craft Workshops

Rann Utsav hosts artisans from across Kutch. Children can try Ajrakh block printing, Bandhani tie-dye, and clay pottery in guided sessions.

Star Gazing

With zero light pollution over the White Rann, the night sky is extraordinary. Our guides point out constellations and tell stories from Indian mythology.

Sand & Salt Play

The vast expanse of the White Rann is the world's largest natural playground. Children love running on the salt flats, collecting crystals, and building salt sculptures.

PLANNING GUIDE

Planning Tips for Your Family Trip

Best Age Groups for Rann Utsav

Rann Utsav is genuinely enjoyable for children from age three onwards, though the experience deepens considerably from age six upward. Children aged six to twelve are in the sweet spot — old enough to participate in craft workshops, young enough to find the camel rides and folk performances magical. Teenagers often cite the star-gazing, ATV rides, and the sheer scale of the White Rann as highlights. Even grandparents travelling with families find the comfortable tents and cultural performances deeply satisfying. Our 2N/3D package is the most popular choice for multi-generational families.

What to Pack for Children

The White Rann can be cold at night (December–January temperatures drop to 8–12°C) and warm during the afternoon (25–30°C). Pack layered clothing — light cottons for the day, warm jackets for evenings. Essential children's items include: closed-toe shoes for the salt flats (avoid sandals — salt crystals are sharp), a wide-brimmed hat and UV sunscreen for the daytime, a good torch for evening walks, and a light waterproof layer. If you have toddlers, bring your own foldable pushchair — the tent city paths are paved and flat. The Rann's white surface reflects UV strongly, so high-SPF sunscreen is non-negotiable even on overcast days. Baby food and formula can be found in Bhuj but may not be available at Dhordo — pack sufficient supplies for toddlers.

Sleeping Arrangements for Families

Our standard tents sleep two adults comfortably. Children under ten can share a parent's tent on a roll-away bed (small additional charge). For families with two or more children, or for families who prefer each child to have their own space, we can book adjacent tents at a group rate. The Rajwadi luxury tents are significantly larger (approximately 40 square metres) and can comfortably accommodate two adults and two children. For extended family groups of eight or more, please call us directly for a customised configuration — we can arrange an entire cluster of adjacent tents, which is a popular choice for multi-generational family holidays.

FAMILY FAQ

Family Package FAQs

Is Rann Utsav safe for children?

Yes — Rann Utsav is extremely family-friendly and safe for children of all ages. The festival grounds are well-lit, security is present throughout, and the Dhordo Tent City is a controlled, curated environment. The White Rann itself is a flat salt desert with no wildlife hazards, making it ideal for children to explore freely. Our family packages include a dedicated guide for families with young children.

What is the minimum age for camel rides?

Children aged four years and above can enjoy camel rides at Rann Utsav. For children between four and eight years, a parent or adult must accompany the child on the camel. Children under four years of age are not permitted on camel rides for safety reasons, but they can sit for photographs in front of the camels. All camel rides are supervised by experienced camel handlers.

Are separate beds available for children?

Yes — our family tents can be configured with separate sleeping arrangements for children. The standard twin-sharing tents can accommodate up to two adults and one child (under ten) on a roll-away bed at a small additional charge. For families with two or more children, we recommend booking an additional tent or our larger Rajwadi tent, which has space for four persons. Please mention the ages of your children at the time of booking.

What activities are available for toddlers?

Toddlers (age one to three years) can enjoy sand play on the salt flats, watching the colourful folk dance performances, exploring the crafts bazaar with handmade puppets and toys, and the gentle camel procession (viewing only). The White Rann at sunset is a magical experience for children of any age — the colours and the vast open space are endlessly fascinating. Our family guides are experienced in managing group activities with mixed age groups.

What is the family package rate for children below 6?

Children below six years of age stay and dine free of charge when sharing a tent with paying adults. Children aged six to twelve years are charged at 50% of the adult per-person rate (from ₹2,950 for the 1N/2D package). Full adult rates apply from age thirteen onwards. Please provide children's ages at booking so we can configure your tent and meals correctly.

FAMILY STORIES

What Families Are Saying

We went with our two boys (ages seven and ten) on the 2N/3D package. The craft workshops were a highlight — both kids painted Ajrakh blocks and wouldn't stop talking about it on the drive back to Bhuj. The tent was spacious, food was incredible, and the White Rann at sunrise had all four of us in complete silence. We've already booked for next season.

Priya & Rajiv MehtaMumbai · 2 Nights / 3 Days

A family of eight — grandparents, parents, and four children ranging from three to fifteen years old. I was nervous about the toddlers, but the team was wonderfully accommodating. The kids slept in a separate tent next to ours, meals were on time and the food was delicious, and the camel ride was the undisputed highlight of our entire trip. Worth every rupee.

Sunita KrishnamurthyBengaluru · 3 Nights / 4 Days

Our six-year-old daughter declared that the White Rann was "like being on the moon." She was right. The star-gazing session on the second night had her asking questions about constellations for weeks afterwards. The entire experience was smooth — from the Bhuj pickup to check-out. Highly recommend for families with children of any age.
