Clarity Before You Book
One of the most common sources of confusion — and occasional disappointment — for first-time Rann Utsav visitors is the question of what exactly is and is not included in a package. The festival draws visitors from across India and abroad, many of whom are accustomed to all-inclusive resort holidays where nearly everything is bundled into the room rate. The Rann Utsav operates differently, and understanding the structure clearly before you travel makes for a far more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
This guide takes you through every element of a standard Rann Utsav package — what you get, what you pay extra for, and what common misconceptions need correcting before you depart.
What Is Always Included
Accommodation
Every Rann Utsav package includes accommodation for the nights specified in the package. A one-night, two-day package starting at ₹5,900 covers one night in the tent city. A two-night, three-day package at ₹11,500 covers two nights. A three-night, four-day package at ₹16,000 covers three nights. The accommodation type — Non-AC Swiss Cottage, AC Swiss Cottage, or Rajwadi AC Cottage — determines the category you are booked into, and the pricing reflects that category.
All cottages include a proper bed, bedding, an attached washroom with running water, and the basic furnishings you would expect in a well-maintained canvas accommodation. Housekeeping is provided daily.
Meals
All packages include two meals per day: breakfast and dinner. These are served at the tent city's central dining area as a buffet that typically includes Gujarati vegetarian dishes — dal, sabzi, roti, rice, and regional preparations — alongside a selection of North Indian options. The food quality is consistently described by guests as genuinely good: fresh, well-cooked, and plentiful.
Lunch is not included in any standard package. Most guests manage this by carrying snacks for the day or purchasing light meals from the food stalls within the tent city complex. These stalls serve chaats, tea, bhajias, and light snacks at reasonable prices.
Entry to the Cultural Programme
The evening cultural programme — which is the festival's headline attraction — is included in all packages. This covers entry to the main performance arena where folk dances, Garba evenings, puppet performances, Kalbelia, and other acts are staged throughout the festival season. You do not need to purchase separate tickets for the evening entertainment; it is part of your package from the first night.
Desert Safari
A complimentary desert safari — a jeep excursion to the White Rann viewpoint — is included in all packages. This is the experience most visitors come for: the journey across the salt flat, the vast white expanse, and the iconic viewpoint platform from which the full scale of the Rann becomes apparent. The safari is typically scheduled at sunrise or sunset to make the most of the light, and the timing is coordinated by the tent city's activity team on arrival.
Transport from Bhuj
Most packages arranged through our team include return transport from Bhuj — the nearest major city and the primary arrival point for visitors flying into Kutch. The drive from Bhuj to Dhordo takes approximately ninety minutes and is arranged as a shared or private transfer depending on the package and group size. If you are arriving at Bhuj Airport or Bhuj Railway Station, your package transfer will be arranged to collect you and return you at the end of your stay.
If you are self-driving or arriving from a different point, the transport component can be adjusted accordingly — this is worth clarifying at the time of booking.
What Is Not Included: The Exclusions List
Airfare and Train Tickets
Getting to Bhuj is your responsibility. Flights to Bhuj Airport (BHJ) operate from Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and occasionally other cities depending on the season. Train connections from Ahmedabad and Mumbai reach Bhuj reasonably well. The cost of your flight or train journey is separate from your Rann Utsav package entirely.
Optional Adventure Activities
Several activities at the tent city are available on a pay-per-use basis and are not part of any standard package. These include ATV (all-terrain vehicle) rides on the salt flat — a popular activity with a cost of approximately ₹500 to ₹800 per person; paramotoring, which gives you aerial views of the Rann and is priced in the range of ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 per session; camel rides for a longer excursion beyond the standard safari; and hot-air balloon rides when available. These activities are entirely optional and can be booked on the spot at the tent city's activity counter.
Lunch
As noted above, lunch is not covered by any package. Budget for two to three hundred rupees per person per day for light snacks and lunch from the tent city's food stalls. If you are going on an all-day excursion to the White Rann or to Dholavira from Dhordo, carry adequate snacks and water.
Personal Shopping
The artisan bazaar — Rann Bazar — is a highlight of the Dhordo tent city, and the temptation to buy Kutchi craft, textiles, and jewellery is considerable. Personal shopping is entirely at your own cost. Depending on your enthusiasm for Kutchi craft, budget anywhere from a few hundred rupees to several thousand for purchases. Bargaining is appropriate at most stalls, but many artisans — particularly those selling Rogan art and Bandhani textiles — work at prices that reflect genuine craftsmanship and do not discount aggressively.
Alcohol
The Rann Utsav tent city is operated in line with Gujarat's prohibition laws. The state of Gujarat is officially dry, and alcohol is not available for sale anywhere within the tent city complex. Guests should not attempt to bring alcohol in, as this is against the rules of the festival and may result in eviction from the premises.
Extra Nights or Day Visits
If you decide, upon arrival, that you want to extend your stay by an additional night, this is subject to availability and is charged separately from your original package. Similarly, if you wish to add a day visit to the Rann viewpoint beyond your included desert safari, additional excursions can be arranged at the activity counter for a supplementary fee.
Common Misconceptions — Corrected
One misconception that surfaces regularly is that the Rann Utsav package price covers the entire trip from your home city. It does not — and it is not designed to. The package covers your stay at the tent city. Travel to and from Bhuj, meals outside the included breakfast and dinner, personal spending, and optional activities are additional costs. Planning your total budget accordingly, rather than treating the package price as your total outlay, will prevent any surprises.
A second misconception concerns the cultural programme. Some visitors assume they need to purchase additional tickets for the evening performances. They do not — the cultural programme is included in all packages, and entry is by the package wristband issued on arrival.
A third misconception relates to children's pricing. Children above a certain age — typically five years — are charged as adults for accommodation and meals. Children below that age stay and eat free. It is worth confirming the current children's policy at the time of booking, as it may vary by season.
Budget Planning: A Realistic Total
If you are booking a two-night, three-day package at ₹11,500 per person, your additional costs over the trip might reasonably include: ₹400 to ₹600 for lunches and snacks, ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 for optional activities (ATV, paramotoring, extra camel rides), and whatever you choose to spend at the artisan bazaar. Return flights from Mumbai to Bhuj add approximately ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 depending on how far in advance you book. Local transport within Bhuj for arrival-day exploration, if you arrive early, adds another few hundred rupees.
In total, a two-night, three-day Rann Utsav experience from Mumbai might reasonably cost one person in the range of ₹18,000 to ₹25,000 all-in, depending on activities and shopping. The package price is not the ceiling — it is the foundation.
