Best Time to Travel from Ahmedabad

For Ahmedabad travellers the entire Rann Utsav season works well — but November and December are the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures hover between 18–28°C and nights are cool enough for the bonfire and stargazing experiences without being uncomfortably cold. Avoid the last week of October if Diwali shopping is in full swing in Ahmedabad — Bhuj-bound trains and the NH 27 highway both get crowded. From late January to February, mornings drop to 8–10°C in the desert; pack thermal layers if you are travelling with elderly guests. Most Ahmedabad families pick a long weekend in November or the Christmas–New Year window when schools are closed.

Insider Knowledge

Ahmedabad Traveller Tips

Practical advice gathered from hundreds of Ahmedabad guests who have travelled with us to Rann Utsav over the past five seasons.

  • Start before 6 AM from Ahmedabad to avoid the SG Highway / Sarkhej-Bavla bottleneck. Most delays on this route are within Ahmedabad city limits, not on the open highway.
  • The Sayla Toll Plaza area has the cleanest restrooms and best dhabas on the Ahmedabad–Bhuj stretch — plan your breakfast stop here around 8:30–9 AM.
  • If travelling by train, the Bhuj Express (12961) and Sayaji Nagari Express (19115) both connect Ahmedabad to Bhuj overnight. Pre-book in October for any November–February travel — these sell out fast.
  • For self-drive, fuel up at the Reliance pump near Bhuj — the next reliable pump on the Bhuj–Dhordo road is at Khavda, about 35 km from Dhordo.
  • Ahmedabad–Dhordo Volvo buses run by GSRTC depart Geeta Mandir bus stand at 9:30 PM and reach Bhuj by 6:30 AM. Book through gsrtcrouting.in or the Paytm bus app.
  • If your Ahmedabad arrival is late, our team can arrange a Bhuj-based driver-guide combination — call +91 70960 90666 the night before so we can dispatch a vehicle to the tent city ahead of time.

FAQ

Ahmedabad to Rann Utsav — Common Questions

Which is the best train from Ahmedabad to Bhuj for Rann Utsav?

The Bhuj Express (12961) departs Ahmedabad at 11:59 PM and reaches Bhuj at 7:30 AM — perfect for a same-morning arrival at Dhordo. The Sayaji Nagari Express (19115) leaves Ahmedabad at 11:55 PM. AC 2-tier and AC 3-tier coaches are both available; book at least four weeks in advance during Rann Utsav season.

How long does the drive from Ahmedabad to Dhordo really take?

In our experience seven to eight hours of driving plus 60–90 minutes for breaks, fuel and meals — call it nine hours door-to-door. Leave Ahmedabad by 5:30 AM to reach Dhordo before the late-afternoon check-in rush, especially on full moon weekends.

Are there direct buses from Ahmedabad to Rann Utsav?

There are no direct AC buses to Dhordo, but GSRTC runs overnight Volvo services from Ahmedabad to Bhuj (about eight hours). From Bhuj, our included transfer or a private taxi (₹2,500) covers the final 80 km to Dhordo Tent City.

Is the road from Ahmedabad to Bhuj safe to drive at night?

NH 27 is well-lit and patrolled up to Samakhiali. Beyond Samakhiali toward Bhuj the highway is darker but still well-maintained. We recommend daytime driving with departure before 6 AM. If you must drive at night, keep a co-driver, and avoid the 1–4 AM stretch when truck traffic peaks.

Can we do a weekend trip to Rann Utsav from Ahmedabad?

Yes — the 1 Night / 2 Days package from ₹5,900 per person works perfectly for Ahmedabad guests. Drive Saturday morning, full Saturday afternoon and evening at the Rann (sunset, folk show, bonfire), Sunday morning sunrise walk and breakfast, drive back Sunday afternoon. We arrange Bhuj pickup if you prefer to take the overnight train.
