Best Time to Travel from Mumbai

Mumbai school calendars line up beautifully with the Rann Utsav peak season. The two strongest windows for Mumbai travellers are the Diwali week (mid-October to early November) and the Christmas–New Year stretch — both align with school holidays and offer perfect 18–26°C desert weather. February half-term and the Republic Day long weekend are the next best slots. Avoid mid-March when Mumbai humidity is rising and Bhuj temperatures climb past 32°C during the day. Mumbai guests should book at least eight weeks in advance for any full moon weekend; flights from BOM to Bhuj sell out completely 30–40 days before peak dates.

Insider Knowledge

Mumbai Traveller Tips

Practical advice gathered from hundreds of Mumbai guests who have travelled with us to Rann Utsav over the past five seasons.

  • Direct IndiGo BOM–BHJ flight (6E-7409) is the only same-day option — book on the IndiGo app two months ahead. Connecting flights via Ahmedabad add four hours and rarely save money during peak season.
  • For train travel, the Bandra Terminus–Bhuj Express (19132) and the Kutch Express (12907) are the two reliable choices. AC 2-tier from BDTS to BHJ is ₹1,800–₹2,400 with the Kutch Express having the better timing (departs 5:35 PM, arrives Bhuj 8:30 AM).
  • If you miss the IndiGo flight back, the Bhuj–Mumbai overnight train at 4:25 PM (12908 Kutch Express) is your only practical fallback. It pulls into Bandra Terminus at 9:45 AM the next morning.
  • Mumbai guests consistently underestimate the cold — pack a heavy fleece even if you fly down. December and January nights at Dhordo can drop to 8°C, much colder than Mumbai winters.
  • Andheri / BKC corporate group bookings should plan around Saturday morning departure / Sunday evening return — this lets you skip a workday and still get two nights at the Rann. Friday flights are pricier.
  • For families travelling with kids under 10, train travel is far less stressful than flying — kids enjoy the overnight sleeper experience and Bhuj station has clean platforms with retiring rooms if you arrive before pickup time.

FAQ

Mumbai to Rann Utsav — Common Questions

Is the IndiGo Mumbai–Bhuj flight reliable for Rann Utsav travel?

Yes — the 6E-7409 flight has a strong on-time record during the November–February window. Mumbai morning fog is rare, and Bhuj airport has no monsoon-related delays at this time of year. Book your return flight to land in Mumbai before 9 PM, leaving you a buffer for any rare delay.

Which Mumbai station should I leave from for Bhuj?

Bandra Terminus (BDTS) is the main departure point for Bhuj-bound trains. Mumbai Central (BCT) has fewer Bhuj services. Allow 60 minutes from south Mumbai to reach BDTS during evening rush hour.

Can we do a Mumbai weekend trip to Rann Utsav?

Yes, with careful flight timing. Friday evening 8:25 PM flight to Bhuj, Saturday and Sunday at the Rann, Monday 6 AM flight back. Most Mumbai working professionals choose this 2 Nights / 3 Days option. We schedule the Bhuj pickup based on your flight time.

How much does a Mumbai family trip to Rann Utsav cost in total?

A family of four flying both ways with our 2N/3D Deluxe AC package: roughly ₹62,000–₹78,000 for the package (₹46,000 base + flights ₹16,000–₹32,000 round-trip). Train travel cuts the total to ₹52,000–₹58,000. Children below six stay free with us.

Are there Mumbai pickup tour packages — door to door?

We do not run road-pickup tours from Mumbai (the 13–15 hour drive is impractical), but we coordinate with Mumbai-based travel partners who offer Volvo coach tours combining a Mumbai–Bhuj train segment and the Dhordo stay. Call our team for partner referrals.
