Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Travel from Udaipur

Udaipur travellers benefit from one of the most scenic desert-to-desert drives in India — Rajasthan's Aravalli landscape transitioning into Gujarat's flat plains. November to February is the best window: Udaipur winter is mild (12–28°C), and the Rann is at its coldest and clearest. Most Udaipur guests time the trip to align with the Christmas–New Year stretch or the late-January Magh Purnima full moon. Avoid early October when post-Navratri Udaipur traffic spills onto the highway, and skip late March when Udaipur pre-summer heat starts climbing. Heritage travellers from Udaipur often pair the Rann with a Junagarh / Bhuj royal palace tour — confirm at booking.

Insider Knowledge

Udaipur Traveller Tips

Practical advice gathered from hundreds of Udaipur guests who have travelled with us to Rann Utsav over the past five seasons.

  • The Udaipur–Ahmedabad highway via Palanpur is in excellent condition. Cruise at 90–100 km/h. Fuel up at the BPCL pump on NH 48 near Khedbrahma.
  • There is no direct Udaipur–Bhuj train. Standard routing is Udaipur–Ahmedabad–Bhuj with one change. Total journey 12–14 hours. Most Udaipur guests prefer driving.
  • Heritage travellers from Udaipur often combine the Rann with a Bhuj royal-palace tour — Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal are excellent counterparts to Udaipur's City Palace complex.
  • For self-drive guests, break the journey at Palanpur for a meal and washroom break — it is the natural midpoint of the Udaipur–Ahmedabad leg.
  • Udaipur royal-tent enthusiasts gravitate to our Rajwadi AC tent category — the embroidered fabric ceilings and brass fixtures recall City Palace aesthetics. Book the 3N/4D Rajwadi package for the full experience.
  • For Udaipur corporate offsites in winter, the Rann is an excellent neutral venue between Rajasthan and Gujarat tourism corridors. Group of 15+ qualifies for our corporate rate.

FAQ

Udaipur to Rann Utsav — Common Questions

How long is the drive from Udaipur to Dhordo?

9–10 hours of driving plus 90 minutes for breaks — call it 11 hours total. Leave Udaipur by 5 AM to reach Dhordo by mid-evening. Many Udaipur guests prefer to break the journey at Ahmedabad.

Is there a direct flight from Udaipur to Bhuj?

No — the practical air route is Udaipur–Ahmedabad (1 hour) then drive 5 hours to Dhordo. Connecting flights via Mumbai are available but rarely save time.

Can I combine the Rann with a Junagadh palace visit?

Yes — the Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal palaces in Bhuj are excellent counterparts to Udaipur's royal heritage. Set aside a half-day on the way back. Our team can recommend a guided tour partner.

Are there Rajasthani-style tents at Rann Utsav?

Yes — our Rajwadi AC tents are inspired by traditional Rajasthani royal tent designs with embroidered fabric ceilings, brass fixtures, and silk drapes. Udaipur heritage travellers consistently book this category. The 3N/4D Rajwadi package gives the most luxurious experience.

Should we drive ourselves or hire a car?

For 6 people or fewer in a single party, hiring a Innova / Crysta from Udaipur (approximately ₹35,000 round-trip with driver) is more comfortable than self-drive on the long highway stretches. Self-drive works well if you have multiple licensed drivers in the party.
